background

remote communication have improved the quality and reliability of power distribution infrastructure.embracing these innovations, utilities have created smart substations based on high-capacity 4G LTE, rugged sensors and Ethernet switches, and smart grid hardware such as RTU, advanced meters and reclosers.smart substations allow utility companies to respond to changing loads, manage power outages and blackouts, and even control grid-wide crashes through real-time remote monitoring and control.

a large European utility company has decided to adopt these advances in smart grid technology, they face a real challenge to build a smart grid: they need to connect thousands of primary substations and hundreds of thousands of secondary substations to smart grid data centers.this will require remote field communication equipment that will meet the needs of their projects for industrial wireless 3G or 4G networks.

In this project, customers face the following needs:

Remote GOOSE message routing between substations,

multiple Ethernet ports and two serial ports for multiple field devices,

4G LTE backup to the Ethernet primary connection,

the conversion from IEC 101 to IEC 104 to support communication between serial field devices and data centers operating on Ethernet.

solution

InRouter915 has five Ethernet ports and two serial ports, 4G LTE and powerful industrial design, exceeding customer requirements.multiple field RTU devices can be connected to InRouter 915 Ethernet ports to provide network connection to remote data centers for remote data acquisition and control. In order to provide mutual communication between smart meters and electronic counters (AMM), IR915 creates a virtual serial network between the serial ports of the router by converting serial data to Ethernet and routing data through a secure encrypted tunnel.

the most demanding and important requirement is GOOSE message communication between secondary and primary substations.InRouter915 uses low latency 4G LTE and L2TPv3 tunnels to provide a virtual local network to simulate local Ethernet connections.
